Check out the new new MAHFIA.COM . This has been a project of mine in the works for oh about…my whole life. Always knew I was going to start my own business since high school and well that time is finally here! The teaser site for MAHFIA.COM launched February 2010 and things have been moving forward at lighting speed ever since. I don’t have too much time to update WoozyLife anymore so these pages will just have to serve as a time capsule for 2009. If MAHFIA.COM doesn’t work out, woozylife is back on! Just kidding.
MAHFIA.COM is a lifestyle videozine that will be like nothing you’ve ever seen before. I’d try to put it in words but I’m a visual person so you’ll just have to watch it unfold and take some wild guesses until the full launch this June.
For now, here are all the clues…

WELCOME TO THE MAHFIA. DON’T ASK QUESTIONS. JUST WATCH.
So skateboarding is likely to be in the olympics soon, yet shit like this is still happening? The best part about it is that the kid wasn’t even skateboarding. He was holding is board and walking…WOW.
One time in college I was skating back to my dorm on campus, just cruising along minding my own business trying to get from point A to B a little quicker. A cop rolled up next to me while I was skating and told me to get off the street and take my hands out of my pocket. Really??? It’s almost 2010 people, skateboarding will probably be the best thing to happen in your kids generation.

ASR aka Action Sports Retailers is a tradeshow that happens twice a year at the San Diego Convention Center downtown. It’s the biggest tradeshow in our industry. To sum it up, brands come to exhibit their newest goods, retailers come to place orders, lots of beer is consumed. But let me take a moment to reminisce about when ASR used to be more fun. I was an intern at Osiris and was 22. This meant I had the energy and motivation to sneak in a backpack full of beer, not to mention the rum and vodka. Interns, take note this is how you score brownie points. Despite the free flowing kegs that roll out at 4pm, having a secret stash is always the way to go. No one wants to waste their time fighting the 15 year old kid in the keg line that snuck into the show. Osiris had a private room at the old booth we used to have and you could pretty much do what you wanted back there. Well, until the security got smart and started patrolling from the rafters above..damnit! Anyway, those were the good ole days. Our boy TDUB was the one who showed us the way. Writing orders while his eyes were closed, I mean that is talent! Nowadays ASR for me is more about saying hi to the homies and checking out new and (hopefully) innovative goods, checking out the fashion show, etc. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time at the show, well mainly because it was small and there wasn’t much to see but here’s what I got for ya:

tubeflops from sanuk. my thoughts are you can only pull this off if you are a cute japanese girl. i'd like to see anyone else try though.
And as always, the parties. Biggest bummer about Agenda (streetwear show) moving to Huntington is that means no more Agenda parties during ASR weekend. Usually the highlight of the weekend is rollin’ to Agenda parties with our homie Dante Ross where the music is good and the vibe is chill. Despite no Agenda this year, we still managed to have a good ass time. We cruised to the Alphanumeric party at Confidential and then the Monster party at the Hard Rock after. Oh and we had a little pre party cab ride that started us on a good note.

XXXXXXX GAMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEESSSSSSS. Oh X Games. For someone who is not a fan of LA I spend a lot of time up there, damn. Anyway, I cruised up to the Home Depot Center in Carson last Thursday to watch the girls vert and street skate contests. One word to describe the girls skating: progression. In both contests the girls stepped it up. In vert Karen, Lynz and Gaby all landed kickflip indys. I have to say I was blown away by the girls street contest. I’ve been going to the X Games and watching the girls skate for the past 3 years but this year I was really really impressed. Although the new format (each rider gets 10 tries, in order, at each obstacle) made for a slower paced session, I will say that it was somewhat more viewer friendly. The girls were throwing down so hard in street, especially because everything in the course was huge. I just wish I could skate half as good as these chicks. I have to say my favorite to watch was Alexis Sablone. I was wondering where she came from and I found out that she apparently just finished her degree in architecture at Columbia University…um yeah no biggie. She landed a kickflip over the 12 stair first try…DAMN. I think its safe to say that she may be the only graduate from the architecture program at Columbia that that will ever kickflip a 12 stair. Props to all the girls who skated and fuck ESPN for not filming it. Here are some photo highlights c/o Dan Coronado and William Prokop:

After spending the day watching some shredding, it was time to experience the other side of X Games…the party scene. Normally industry parties are pretty fun because there are a lot of people that you know or you meet people that are awesome. However, when the party takes place in downtown LA at a scened out hotel such as The Standard, its a little different. Well I was lucky enough to experience this wonderful atmosphere because my good friend Nereida Aguayo is a designer at DC Shoes and had a room for the night. We met up with our other friend Val from Spy and checked out all the haps. Val had some tickets to the X Games 3D movie premier so we went to that for a good 20 minutes. It was cool for about 10 minutes but there is only so much mainstream/ESPN-ish overload I can take in an action sports film. The Nokia live theater was HUGE, I’ve seriously never seen so many people in one room. Anyway, we got out of there halfway through the film because frankly I was scared to experience that many people trying to exit a theater.
We headed back to the Standard where we went up to the rooftop party that DC threw. Of course the entertainment started in the elevator where we had the pleasure of riding up with 5 drunk ass girls who were wearing dresses too skanky and heels too high for their own good. Ahh LA. It was a minute long elevator ride with the typical drunk picture taking marathon while the chicks were spilling their drinks and falling all over themselves. Awesome. Unfortunately I started off the night far too sober for such a scene. I will say that the view from the rooftop bar was pretty cool. As the night went on, the party got less annoying and more fun. Or maybe it was the alcohol. Yeah it must have been the alcohol. Highlights include seeing Audrina from the Hills…haha. I mean where else would you have the Dingo and Audrina at the same party? I guess if it really was a good party, it would have been LC and Danny, not just their sidekicks. Anyway, I hung out with the DC women’s design crew: Nereida, Tammy and Karen, and they are awesome. The night ended in the only way it should end: a hotel room afterparty that included calling room service for drunchies (drunk munchies). Quote of the night is Karen saying to DC Snow TM Zach “I’m old enough to be your mom. I could shotgun this beer while changing your diaper.” Fuckin awesome.

Meet my friend Karen Jonz. This girl is amazing. She is a professional skateboarder, talented artist, plays music and sings in her own band, models, and is an entrepreneur with her own accessory apparel line. Did I mention that she is an X Games Gold medalist? I’ve gotten to know Karen pretty well in the past year working with her on the Osiris Girls team, traveling on a couple team trips and she also lived at my house for a month earlier this year. She is passionate about everything she does and never settles for anything less than perfection which is pretty much the reason why she is the best girls vert skater in the world. AND she is hilarious to hang out with….sometimes things come out of her mouth and I’m like, WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY? Half the time it’s because she is speaking portugenglish (she is brazilian) and half the time it’s just because it’s flat out ridiculous.
Anyway, Karen killed it at everything we worked on together, whether it was skating (obviously), photo shoot concepts, ad & marketing ideas, etc etc. My job would have sucked without her. PS, check out the last ad we worked on together that is featured in this month’s issue of Seventeen Magazine.
Next week is X Games 15 and Karen is defending her gold medal in women’s vert on Thursday July 30th at the Home Depot center in LA. For the first time this year, ESPN has stepped up to the plate and is giving equal prize money for girls and guys. That is rad, however, In the past, despite having both a girls skateboard street and skate vert contest, if you weren’t in LA at the event, you would never know that these comps even existed because they NEVER ran a single highlight or clip about it on tv. DEAR ESPN, if you are going to spend all this money having a girls comp, SHOW IT ON TV! I’m not saying complete coverage, I’m just saying at least show the highlights…..come on giant television network…get your shit together……
Karen is one to watch out for – this girl is more than a triple threat, she is any marketeer’s dream come true. (I had to look up marketeer because I was pretty sure it was a word but it just sounds nerdy as hell. oh well I’m using it anyway…) I’m telling you, K Jonz has got that star quality so keep an eye and ear out for her…she will be making moves for sure.
Get to know Karen a little better: http://espn.go.com/action/xgames/xg15/index

Maloof Money Cup was last weekend. Last year we went and saw ridiculous skateboarding. This year we went and saw ridiculous skateboarding. Alex Perelson, who is 18, landed a 900 in the crazy mini mega/vert ramp….the crowd went bezerk, it was pretty awesome to experience that live. I hung out with Karen Jonz as well as Annie Sullivan and we enjoyed the ridiculous skateboarding along with all the weirdos at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Osiris team rider Leticia Bufoni killed it in girls street and took home $25,000….so awesome. Leticia has been killing it this past year, coming onto the scene from Brazil and turning lots of heads when shes on that piece of wood with wheels. Congrats Leticia….!

June 21st is a holiday. For the past 2 years, I’ve spent this joyous day cruising with Annie Sullivan and a sea of yellow at Sector 9′s annual boardwalk poker run. This year was no different – another beautiful day in Mission Beach, CA. Doesn’t get much better than this people. I hung out with Annie, as well as Sector 9 surfers Jen Smith and Kim Mayer. Fun crew, fun times. Check out pics from the day as well as a little skate down memory lane…
