THE WOOZY LIFE

GOODBYE WOOZYLIFE HELLO MAHFIA!

Check out the new new MAHFIA.COM . This has been a project of mine in the works for oh about…my whole life. Always knew I was going to start my own business since high school and well that time is finally here! The teaser site for MAHFIA.COM launched February 2010 and things have been moving forward at lighting speed ever since. I don’t have too much time to update WoozyLife anymore so these pages will just have to serve as a time capsule for 2009. If MAHFIA.COM doesn’t work out, woozylife is back on! Just kidding.

MAHFIA.COM is a lifestyle videozine that will be like nothing you’ve ever seen before. I’d try to put it in words but I’m a visual person so you’ll just have to watch it unfold and take some wild guesses until the full launch this June.

For now, here are all the clues…

36 HOURS IN VEGAS

After Tahoe I decided to take a quick trip out to Vegas to check out MAGIC since I’ve never been before. My homegirl Nereida aka womens footwear merchandiser/color wizard/illustrator extraordinaire/my fashion guru at DC Shoes was heading out there to do the rounds so I decided to go with her. 36 hours in Vegas and a room at the Venetian courtesy of DC Shoes? How could I say no? Having been to ASR, SIA and SURF EXPO, the only tradeshow experience I know involves bros, energy drink pro-hos, groms running around feening for schwag and usually the perfect beer buzz right around 4pm…so I was interested to see how a fashion tradeshow would stack up. MAGIC is actually a bunch of tradeshows linked together. The ones we made it to were MAGIC, PROJECT, S.L.A.T.E and POOL. From what I took away from it all, MAGIC is basically women’s fashion big brands, everything from true religion to skechers (barf). PROJECT is fashion forward boutique-y brands big and small such as L.A.M.B, Alife, Insight plus lots of up and comers. S.L.A.T.E is basically ASR and Agenda mixed with Affliction, Ed Hardy + MMA brands + HOT TOPIC type stuff. POOL is more accessory based brands such as Tokidoki, Yakpak and Baggu and focused on brands that have a message behind the fashion such as green initiatives, etc. SLATE is the most relevant for me and anyone in action sports and in true skate/surf/snow/streetwear nature it was definitely the most happening of the four shows. I guess having Skullcandy on any tradeshow floor rockin live DJ sets pretty much always means a party.

PS. to the couple of people that gave me shit when they saw me taking photos, I say to you, if your products are really that amazing and unique, you should be confident that no one will be able to replicate it. And if someone does come up with the same shit…then that just means you need to step up your marketing game. It’s a dog eat dog world we live in so stop worrying about me taking photos and start working a little harder. End of story.

And here is the photo recap of our trip:

Kicked it in LB last weekend with my homie JV and his girlfriend Sara. Funnest sidewalk shredding ever, seriously. Joel Tudor Sector 9 pro model + 4th street sidewalks & curbs = amazing. Also 4th street has some of the best vintage thrift shops ever. The scene around here is pretty hipster but I take hipsters over PB douche bags anyday. Some woozy vision for ya with the point and shoot cam:

push dont pollute

la bomba is the bomb!

hammertime

i dont think anything screams hipster more than this rainbow assortment of cardigans

70s

the grab bag pile in the back...you gotta work for the goods

A couple weeks ago, we did a little lifestyle photoshoot out in Julian with Melissa. My good friend and ridiculously awesome photographer Dan Coronado took photos and me and my buddy Mike Jines shot some video. The weather was weird that day — it went from sunny and warm to thuderstormy and cloudy and then there was a rainbow…a little crazy for an outdoor shoot but we made the best of it.

ASR SEPT 09

ASR aka Action Sports Retailers is a tradeshow that happens twice a year at the San Diego Convention Center downtown. It’s the biggest tradeshow in our industry. To sum it up, brands come to exhibit their newest goods, retailers come to place orders, lots of beer is consumed. But let me take a moment to reminisce about when ASR used to be more fun. I was an intern at Osiris and was 22. This meant I had the energy and motivation to sneak in a backpack full of beer, not to mention the rum and vodka. Interns, take note this is how you score brownie points. Despite the free flowing kegs that roll out at 4pm, having a secret stash is always the way to go. No one wants to waste their time fighting the 15 year old kid in the keg line that snuck into the show. Osiris had a private room at the old booth we used to have and you could pretty much do what you wanted back there. Well, until the security got smart and started patrolling from the rafters above..damnit! Anyway, those were the good ole days. Our boy TDUB was the one who showed us the way. Writing orders while his eyes were closed, I mean that is talent! Nowadays ASR for me is more about saying hi to the homies and checking out new and (hopefully) innovative goods, checking out the fashion show, etc. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time at the show, well mainly because it was small and there wasn’t much to see but here’s what I got for ya:

tubeflops from sanuk. my thoughts are you can only pull this off if you are a cute japanese girl. i'd like to see anyone else try though.

And as always, the parties. Biggest bummer about Agenda (streetwear show) moving to Huntington is that means no more Agenda parties during ASR weekend. Usually the highlight of the weekend is rollin’ to Agenda parties with our homie Dante Ross where the music is good and the vibe is chill. Despite no Agenda this year, we still managed to have a good ass time. We cruised to the Alphanumeric party at Confidential and then the Monster party at the Hard Rock after. Oh and we had a little pre party cab ride that started us on a good note.

SKATEBOARDING AND GLAMOUR MAGAZINE

glamour magazine - leticia killin it and lookin' smokin hot

glamour magazine - leticia killin it and lookin' smokin hot

Bet you didn’t think the two would ever go together. Well guess what you are WRONG. Check out this month’s issue of Glamour Magazine with a Secret deodorant ad in it featuring one of the most bad ass girl street skaters, Leticia Bufoni. I saw Leticia skate for the first time in 2007, fresh off the plane from Brazil competing in X Games at age 15, and she has been killin’ it since then. She was added to the Osiris team by Tony and I worked with her and photographer Ana Paula Negrao who took her under her wing to help her career these past couple of years. I helped Leticia get her work visa last year and now she is going to school at Hollywood High and shreddin’ the streets of LA. Most recently she won the Maloof Money Cup which is one of the biggest skate contests of the year.

So how in the hell did a secret deodorant ad come about? Well, William (Marketing at Osiris Shoes aka my office roommate) got an email from his buddy Dave at iPath who got an email from his buddy that read this:

“A friend is doing casting and they’re looking for a girl who can do tricks down a 5-stair. And she has to be attractive. Does this exist? Do you know of anyone?”

“does this exist?” is my favorite part. Well as a matter of fact yes she does exist and her name is Leticia. So after a handful of emails later, Leticia and Ana were off on a plane to New York and here is the finished product. The ad is of course real, the only thing is the heels are photoshopped. I mean skateboarding in heels is something that is definitely impossible unless you are cool with spraining both your ankles. She is boardsliding a handrail on a 5-stair in a pretty damn short dress with hair and make up intact which is pretty damn impressive. Anyhow, she is also featured on the Secret homepage. Check out what Leticia can do on a skateboard in normal clothes in the video below…

TOR BY STEF TOR

My good friend Stef Tor is a pioneer in her sport, being one of the first female professional wakeskaters ever. But Stef also happens to be an amazingly talented fashion designer. I’m not talking about graphic tees, I’m talking about serious mind blowing crazy fashion design. I mean that is pretty much the two most opposite ends of the spectrum, right? On a given day, she might session a rail and then sew a dress. A lot of people are only good at one thing, and even more people are good at nothing, so to be good at two totally different things….? Amazing. Stef recently had her work featured at a fashion show in Orlando and won best in show and most innovative design. Then she made it to the final closed casting call for Project Runway Season 6. She recently launched “TOR by STEF TOR.” Check out the website here: http://torbysteftor.com/ and a video below, shot by Brandon Parker, straight from the runway. STEFANI, you are the shiettt!

Just when we thought things couldn’t get crazier in China….we see this shoe at one of the shopping malls in Shanghai. I mean it’s one thing to knock stuff off but you would think they would at least get the brands right….maybe they sell more this way because you are getting two brands in one shoe…

THAT CREEPER AT THE BAR

You know when that creeper is eying you at the bar? Well, now there is a solution:

“The freaks come out at night. They glom onto your elbow, disrupt your conversations and worst of all, they freeze out the real hot prospects. First step? Slip on the ring — a little bright lie that says you’re married to the man of your dreams (whenever he gets here). When the coast is clear, stash your secret weapon in your keychain. Next time an unwanted suitor lurks near, tap your inner vixen and remember: you’re Ms. Taken!”
